Oklahoma Upsets No. 1 Texas 27-24 on a Last-Second Field Goal in Dallas
Tate Sandell's 47-yarder as time expired beat the top-ranked Longhorns at the Cotton Bowl, Oklahoma's first win over a No. 1 team since 2007.
Oklahoma beat top-ranked Texas 27-24 on Saturday, Oct. 10, when Tate Sandell kicked a 47-yard field goal as time expired in the Red River Rivalry at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
It was Oklahoma's first victory over a No. 1 team since 2007 and kept the Sooners from a third straight loss in the series. Oklahoma (3-2, 1-1 SEC) arrived off a 41-13 loss at Georgia; Texas (4-1, 1-1) had held the No. 1 ranking since beating Ohio State on Sept. 12.
How it unfolded
The Sooners scored on special teams and defense: Danny Okoye blocked a punt that Dakoda Fields recovered in the end zone, and Peyton Bowen returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown to make it 24-17. Texas answered when Arch Manning threw a 15-yard touchdown to Jermaine Bishop Jr. to tie it at 24. Manning finished 19 of 31 for 260 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions, the last by Courtland Guillory with 19 seconds left.
John Mateer then completed passes of 13 and 20 yards to Isaiah Sategna, both upheld on replay review, to set up Sandell's kick. Texas's Gianni Spetic had missed a 53-yard attempt wide right with 1:55 remaining.
Oklahoma managed 238 total yards and went three-and-out seven times. Texas hosts No. 16 Florida next, and Oklahoma hosts Kentucky.
